Integrating
Astrology and healing with the Bach flower remedies
Dr. Edward Bach, who developed
the remedies, was a very special and gifted British physician who eventually turned
from the orthodox medicine of his time to Homeopathy. He believed one must "treat
the whole person", not just the symptoms of
disease to ensure a lasting cure. He also believed it is the patient who heals him/herself;
that doctors, medicine, surgery, etc., were just the catalysts that triggered the
internal healing mechanism we each possess. He was committed to finding a healing
system that was simple and natural, so the common person, with no previous knowledge
of medicine, would be able to treat him/herself. His search led him back to Nature...to
the flowers and trees of the field from which he felt natural healing aids were
available.
He eventually found and developed 38 different herbal essences that related to the
different "States of Mind" he had observed in his patients that seemed
to be the underlying cause of their illnesses. These essences had the ability to
bring balance and harmony back to the body in a simple and safe manner, thereby
affecting healing. As an example, if one had feelings of fear from a known origin,
s/he could take the remedy mimulus, which relates to known fears. By taking
this essence, the feelings of fear are eventually reduced and brought into balance,
no longer causing anxiety which, if continued over time, could bring on disease.
Astrology can be a tool for more than one healing technique. Not only can the Astrologer
facilitate the client's self-understanding through chart interpretation, but also
offer insight into possible Bach remedies through utilization of the natal chart.
Let's now take a look at some of these correlations between difficult planetary
patterns and the remedies that can be helpful in working these through. Please bear
in mind that the following is an oversimplification of the Astrological information,
as well as being hypothetical general correlations which always need to be modified
by taking into account the individual client's energies and situation.
What more appropriate place to begin than with an Aries or Mars emphasis in a chart!
For impatience, irritability and tension, the remedy impatiens is indicated. It helps one to "go with the
flow" more and have the ability to be more tolerant with those slower than
themselves.
White Chestnut is the remedy that aids the restless mind;
where concentration may be a problem, as well as thoughts that become obsessive
-- like a phonograph needle stuck in the same groove. Strong Mercury as well as
Gemini or Virgo signatures may relate to this remedy.
For those with a heavy Aquarian or Uranus influence, the remedy Water Violet may be indicated. These people tend to
be aloof, cool, detached individuals -- the "Greta Garbo" type! This remedy
allows one to be more socially involved when necessary and thus to share the gifts
they possess with others.
Scleranthus helps to bring balance to those who suffer
from indecision, who vacillate from side-to-side and can't come to a final decision.
Yes, if you guessed Libra, you're "right on"! This remedy aids in the
ability of making decisions and taking a stand.
For Neptune afflictions, as well as a Piscean emphasis in a chart, the remedy Clematis assists in grounding and bringing one "out
of the fog." This remedy is also excellent while undergoing Neptune transits
which can temporarily bring confusion and "spaceyness".
It has to be said, that that the Bach Remedies are extremely helpful during major
transits and not just for natal aspects or particular sign emphasis alone.
Another helpful remedy during those Neptune transits is Hornbeam,
when vitality seems lacking (especially to the Sun, Moon, and Mars.) Hornbeam assists
in bringing the energy level up again. This is also applicable during Saturn transits
to the Sun as well. Speaking of Saturn, check out heavy Capricorn emphasis, as well
as hard Saturn aspects.
The remedy Vine helps balance those "dictatorial"
urges, as well as Oak for those who tend to overwork themselves
(Virgos may relate to this, also).
Many times fears, as well as lack of confidence, is associated with Capricorn-Saturn
signatures. The remedy Mimulus helps release known fears, and the remedy
Larch assists in bringing feelings of self-worth
to the fore.
Not to forget our Cancerians or strong Moon children who many times are over-protective
and sometimes manipulative. Chicory does wonders for the mother-hens out there!
Scorpio-Pluto natives can also be helped with this remedy, as well Holly if there are problems with feelings of jealousy,
suspicion or revenge.
Another very important remedy helpful during major life transitions and transits
is Walnut. It helps one release and let go of the
old. Pluto to the Sun is certainly a time of major changes where this remedy can
help one better cope.
There are many more correlations, but this should be enough to "whet your appetite",
to stir up your curiosity so that you may go on to explore the Bach Remedies yourselves...
Dr. Bach's gift to humanity, this wonderfull healing system, can be a fine tool
for Astrologers in working with their clients. Once started to discover, you'll
be opening a door not only for Self-Help, but in helping others as well.
For an astrologer it might be interesting that Dr. Bach originally came up with
12 remedies. He eventually added the others as "helpers". A case could
be made for the correlation of the original 12 remedies to the 12 Zodiac signs.
In fact, there is a book that does exactly that, "The 12 Healers of the Zodiac" by Peter Damian, which is recommendable
in this context.
