Bindrunes

some knowledge of the runes and sigils might be nessesary to understand this short article completely.

Bindrunes are passive attributes of magick. The basis of them are the 24 runes, that ancient magickal germanic alphabet. In several schools of ceremonial magick, they are still effectively used.

Basically, a
bindrune is a rune created from two or more runes which are merged together. A good source for information on bindrunes might be the book
"The Galdrabok: An Icelandic Grimoire" ,by Stephen Flowers,
published by Samuel Weiser.
It is translated from an Icelandic grimoire It is therefore useful because it shows the difference between sigils, runic forms, and other magical symbols.
(A grimoire is a book in which magickal charms, spells, invocations, evocations, incantations, and more magickal practice are brought together.)

Galdramyndir are signs of magick, that might have runic origins, according to Stephen Flowers. He tells in his book also about encoded runic forms called
villuletur or villurunir. These forms, magickally used, are meant
to confuse and conceal people, rather than reveal the meanings.
The so called
varnastafir are protective staves.

Flowers lists three maintypes of these kind of signs:

Bandrunir
Bindrunes made of more or less obvious combinations of runes.

Galdrastafr
Magic staves which may have been bindrunes but became stylized and became recognizable on their own.

Galdramyndir
Nnonrunic abstract signs. An example for these kind of
signs is the Thor's Hammer, (Donar), wear by many worshippers of the germanic religion today.

When creating bindrunes, it presents some of the problems that appear also in sigil magic.
You must to have a very clear idea of what it is you want to accomplish. You must to know the meanings interpretations, and use of the runes, before you create a magical form of them. A main problem here is, that your own perception of the rune needs to be in a very high grade in tune with the usual recognized use. Using a rune just because you
think it might work, generally doesn't bring the wished goals. It even can have unfortunate results!

A bindrune can be created from a word that is spelled in runes and then combined it in design.
Before starting, you must to decide if you want to be able to recognize it later, or if the combined form should become more important.
A balanced design implies stability; such types are good for protection and hide.
If you want a more dynamic use, something that seems outward expanding would be better, it should intent that in the graphical expressing of the created bindrune. Such runes are good for confuse.

something very important to keep in mind, is to check, if no other bindrune was created with some onter intention, that could significally change the actual intent.
Mind too, that once the bindrune is working it is very difficult to unbind it. The only way might be, to repeat in reverse direction the complete process of creation and activation. Every detail might be of importance!
So, before doing anything, decide what it is, that you exactly want. How long must it be operational; maybe permanent? Temporary?
And how are you unbinding it, if nessesary?
