The Merseburger Spells

GardenStone

These Spells are written down in the 10th century and were later found in a monastery in the german city of Merseburg. They are the only pure Spells from the pre-christian time that are completely delivered to us.
The spells are most likely from Germanic origin.

went to the woods;
when Balder's foal
had contorted his foot.
So sang Sinthgunt
and Sunna her sister;
so sang Frija
and Folla her sister;
so sang Wotan,
as he well could:
Be it legcontortion,
be it bloodcontortion,
be it
limbcontortion:
leg to leg,
blood to blood,
limb to limb,
so that they linked be.
